So it's official, the engine in my 77' VW Bus is officially over, and i dont know what to do! The mechanic wants 3600 to rebuild it, about 3550 to put a new one in. I need help, there must be a cheaper way to do this! I can drop the engine myself and install and new one if anyone knows where i can get a reliable rebuilt/ new engine!? HELP!!! :)

Re: I need an engine
Mon, September 1, 2008 - 10:13 AMStep 1; go to thesamba.com and ask in the engine forums about good local suppliers in your area. Step 2; install it and follow ALL break in proceedures for a new engine. Step 3; thumb your nose at that outrageous price quote from the mechanic. -

How urgently do you need the engine? If you have a little time to shop, you might be able to find one via Craigslist. (I've gotten a couple for my Rabbit pick-up that way. ) I got my most recent from a wrecked Jetta for $750.
I think you need a new mechanic. -

Sat, September 13, 2008 - 9:52 PMAssuming you know engines that's a good way to go. But if you don't have space/tools/time to crack the case or at the very least pull the heads to check them out it's not the best option. -

Probably true. My mechanic is also a family friend, and we can usually get him to come along to check it before we purchase.
